Boxing Live 2: Enjoyable fighting game

Boxing Live 2 is a very refined fighting game that improves greatly over the previous edition.

The graphics are intentionally cartoonish and a little silly. They exaggerate many of the small things about boxing that most people are familiar with today. The music and sound effects are good. Some voiceover work is present in the game that adds to the atmosphere but the heavy accent of the actors makes it hard to understand what is being said at some points.

Boxing Live 2

You start in BoxingLive 2 by creating a customized boxer. You can customize the appearance, gloves and trunks of your boxer. This is where you see that your boxer actually has stats like speed, stamina and chin. A change from the last game is that you no longer get to distribute points between your stats when starting. Your fighter goes in with the default stats.
Your goal in Boxing Live 2 is to win awards and slowly climb up the ranks to become world champion. You do this through individual boxing matches. The controls in the game are very simple. The arrow or WASD keys throw different types of punches or block. The control button throws a power swing. You do not actually move your character during bouts.

You are given the option to train your boxer before a fight starts. The boxing training involves trying to do your best at four different mini-games. Most of the games involve hitting keys in the correct order and rhythm. If you do very well, then a few of your stats will increase. It is important to train before every match since the opponents you face almost always have higher numbers.

The actual gameplay during the matches in Boxing Live 2 is fun, challenging and easy to follow. You watch your opponent from a first-person perspective. You throw punches and try to make combinations. You look for openings while fighting as well. If you win, then you unlock the next match and new rings in some cases. You also earn cash after winning that can be used to buy cosmetic upgrades or to pay trainers that are more effective.
A problem with this boxing game is that it is relatively hard at the beginning. Your first few matches are against opponents who have nearly double your stats. Your punches do not even hurt these opponents. This means you have to lose a few times and keep training until you are finally strong enough. The game overall, however, is a very well done casual boxing game.
